Can I Install Ducted Air Conditioning Unit in My Townhouse?
Ducted air conditioning units in a townhouse may seem like an impossible option. However, you will be relieved to learn that it is completely doable and often the best choice.
Read on to learn about the benefits of choosing a ducted air conditioning unit for your townhouse or multi-storey home.
How Does a Ducted Air Conditioning Unit Work?
Via ducts installed in the ceiling, cool (or warm) air is pumped into each room. Ducts (or pipes) installed in the ceiling funnel air from a compressor/condenser unit located outside your building. There is also a central unit that is housed in the ceiling. This installation requires adequate roof space to allow the ducts, generally between 200mm and 400mm in diameter, to be installed.
Our clients don’t need to get too concerned about what space you do – or don’t – have available for ducting here at Power Trip. We specialise in complex jobs, and our qualified air conditioning team will take the hard work out of deciding what air conditioner set-up will work best – and ultimately be the most cost-effective – for your townhouse.
Benefits of Ducted Air Conditioners
Ducted air conditioning units provide a discrete and aesthetically pleasing option for cooling (and warming) residences. A feature called “zoning” also allows rooms to have their temperatures controlled individually, allowing comfort for all occupants.
Although they might appear at face value to be a more expensive option, you may be surprised to learn just how the costs compare.
Ducted air conditioners can also be advantageous in the following ways:
- As the fan is located outside of the building, they can be a lot quieter in their operation
- Lower energy bills due to increased energy efficiency
- Less intrusive
- Health benefits due to air filtration system
- A centrally controlled thermostat allows maximum even temperature control through the home and maximum sustainability and energy efficiency.
- It can be used for efficient heating too – with a reverse air system installed
- Multiple zones allow for upstairs and downstairs areas to be controlled separately.
- Increase the value of your home.
Is My Townhouse Suitable for a Ducted Air Conditioning Unit?
Due to the multi-storey design of a townhouse, several factors need to be considered to assess suitability for a ducted air conditioning unit.
Whether your home is a new build or an existing two-storey townhouse, there are always options available to you, and the Power Trip team are always happy to discuss what configuration might be best for your property.
Existing Townhouses
When we first assess the suitability of a ducted air conditioner for your existing townhouse, we may ask you some of the following questions:
- Is there a ceiling and roof cavity on the top floor of your home for us to mount the central unit?
- Is there access for droppers (vents) to reach downstairs rooms to provide their airflow?
- Are there existing bulkheads or cupboards that can provide space for ducts to run?
Although some limitations may apply when planning dropper installation to your existing home and the need to work around lower ceiling plastering. The good news is Power Trip specialises in providing and designing custom options in situations that may seem impossible to others.
Kerry designs all of our ducted air conditioning layouts in-house, ensuring the best result every time. Where others might opt for the easy route or tell you the job is impossible, Kerry will ensure that every option is explored!
New Townhouses
Fortunately, your ducted air conditioning unit can be included in the planning stages if you are designing a new build. Although special considerations will still need to be made to allow the central unit, ducts, vents and droppers to be installed on both levels, modifications can be made in the design before breaking ground. This will ensure that your new home is well prepared and suitable for your cooling system and provides maximum energy and economic benefits.
If you have a multi-level townhouse or home, ducted air conditioning can be a great choice. It doesn’t need to be complicated or overwhelming, and with the team’s assistance at Power Trip, no detail will be overlooked.
