Movember Australia 2021- Last year marked the beginning of an annual tradition for the Power Trip crew as we took part in our first-ever Movember. It marked the inception of the Power Trip Mo Bros, and this year they rise to the occasion again!
Movember in Australia is a significant occasion each year for men and, in particular, our tradies and miners. It is one of the most high-profile events to support the challenges faced by men and their health.
What Is Movember?
Movember is held in November each year and is host to a number of different events aimed at raising awareness and funds to support men’s mental health in Australia. Of these events, the highest-profile one is the “Grow A Mo”.
Men begin the month clean-shaven and select their “style” from the “Moustache Style Guide”.

Throughout November, the “Mo Bros” work hard to cultivate their blossoming moustaches, as their efforts are recognised through fundraising support and sponsorship. The event is marketed as light-hearted and fun to participate in, but the cause should not be overlooked. Men’s mental illness and suicide rates are on the rise in Australia, and so are prostate and testicular cancer. Movember addresses them all, and since it began in 2003, Movember has funded more than 1250 projects to support men’s health around the world.
Men’s Mental Health – A Silent Pandemic
For Kerry, the owner of Power Trip Services, the rationale behind Movember takes on personal significance.
With so many men inclined to hide their issues and put on a brave face as they struggle, Kerry believes that Movember plays a great role in making men’s health “visible”.
Seeing men wearing their moustaches proudly as they grow them throughout the month reminds people to check on their mates. It encourages them the often-overlooked question, “Are you doing ok?”
“When it comes to Movember, and you see that clean-shaven face on a bloke that is normally rocking the scruff, and by the end of the month seeing how they got on with the Tash, (often men struggle to grow one but it’s a bit of fun trying anyway) you get that feeling of “there is a brother that has probably got something going on and wants to show his support to those that may have a bit more on their plate.“ I always say it’s hard to run when you’ve got the black dog nipping at your heels, but there is a way at least for one month that we can try and help!,” said Kerry.
The Power Trip crew believe that it is crucial to keep an eye on who has grown a mo through Movember because awareness and visibility is key to creating change.
Why Shine a Light on Men’s Mental Health?
When asked this question, Kerry takes on a more serious tone in his response. One that is perhaps brushed under the carpet too frequently.
“Having been on the pointy end of having that decision and burying friends that can’t get past it, probably because their head takes over, they didn’t reach out for help, their medication made them worse,” Kerry says.
“Who knows the whole reason? Everyone is different, but it’s the families that lose every time. It’s the kids without their father, the ladies without their life partner, the parents without their son. It is also the brothers, the mates and everyone else that gets left behind that has to go on in their absence.”
With this in mind, Kerry knew that his boys were the perfect flagbearers for Movember.
The Power Trip Mo Bros
This year, the Power Trip team have embraced Movember with vigour. They have set themselves two ambitious fundraising goals:
- To raise over $1000 in sponsored donations
- To donate 10% per job that Power Trip Services is engaged to complete in November
Kerry notes that there may be varying levels of success across their team, with some of their team “too precious” to shave their perfectly manicured beards and others who are historically unable to “grow a mo”. ????
Another obstacle arose when electrician Danny recently suffered a broken foot, so his anticipated “Mo Your Yard” planned event won’t be going ahead in 2021.
Despite these setbacks, the boys are determined to show their support to Movember and are now embroiled in a heated challenge to outdo each other’s moustache growing prowess.
The styles the guys are aiming for this year are:
- Kerry: The Rockstar
- Danny: A Mo (of any kind!)
- Alec: Fu Man Chu
- Jimmy: The Regent
- Campbell: The Pencil
- Jony: The Bull Horn
Power Trip Mo Bros Predictions
Following his observations during the 2020 Movember Australia event, Kerry has offered up the following predictions of success and failure for this year.
Best Mo Grower: Jimmy. Jimmy is apparently a bit of a mo aficionado and very hard to beat!
Mo Grow Fails: Kerry believes that most of the team will fail in their attempts to create the mo they dream of, but in particular, gives Danny 100:1 odds of producing any moustache at all.
