Ducted Vs Split Systems Air Conditioning

If you’re seeking year-round comfort in our Queensland climate and wondering whether a ducted air conditioning or split system will be best for your property, this article is for you! Some of the biggest factors are roof space and house layout, but there’s plenty to consider when making a decision about air conditioning. In this blog, the air conditioning experts from Power Trip Services in North Brisbane answer all your questions, including: What is ducted air conditioning? What is split system air conditioning? What are main differences between the two? (And considerations to keep in mind) What Is Ducted Air Conditioning? Ducted air conditioning systems have a central fan coil unit installed in the roof space. From that unit there are numerous ducts in the ceiling cavity which move treated air into each room. Standard ducted systems reach the entire house from a central control – allowing widespread heating or cooling, typically zoned into individual rooms or areas. One of the biggest advantages of ducted air conditioning is that it tends to look better. There’s no cumbersome wall mounted indoor units required, rather a discrete vent in the ceiling or wall. For every ducted system, an outdoor unit will also need to be installed. What Is Split System Air Conditioning? Split systems typically cool or heat the area or room just where the indoor unit is located and will struggle to cool or heat other parts of the property. Split system air conditioning consists of two main parts – a unit mounted indoors (in each room) and a unit located outdoors. The evaporator device is housed in the indoor unit. The compressor and condenser components are contained in the outdoor unit. Piping, rather than ducts, connect the two units. Main Differences between Ducted and Split Systems 1. Air Conditioning Installation While ducted systems tend to be more complicated – and require careful consideration to design the best configuration to suit your needs – the end result is much slicker and gives homeowners greater flexibility with smart home integration options. Here at Power Trip Services, ducted air conditioning is our speciality and unlike many others on Brisbane’s northside, we design your ducted system in-house to ensure you get the best system setup and help keep running costs as low as possible. While split systems also have a reputation for being cheaper overall this will depend on the property and your heating/cooling needs. Power Trip Services offer several configuration options when it comes to split systems and will help you choose the best brand, size and mounting option depending on your budget and room. We recommend at least one (1) service each year regardless of which type of air conditioner you have. People who live in areas which are particular dusty or near the ocean should consider having a service more frequently. 3. Air Conditioning Performance Ducted systems are effective at both covering large areas and heating or cooling specific zones. Split systems are good at heating or cooling small spaces/rooms, but you can opt for larger units which are more powerful for those bigger open plan living spaces. 4. Air Conditioning Appearance Inside the home, ducted air conditioning appears less obtrusive with outlets being placed on the ceiling (out of eyeline). They’re also typically quite small. Whereas split system units indoors are more obvious due to their size and shape. Both types of air conditioning have units which are located outdoors. 5. Air Conditioning Cost Ducted systems tend to be more expensive to install, but costs can add quickly for those who choose split systems if you intend to install multiple units. Many of our clients are actually surprised to learn that ducted is often not that much more expensive. This is why we always recommend reaching out to our friendly team who will discuss your individual needs and weigh up the best option with you. 6. Air Conditioning Noise Generally speaking, ducted units tend to be quieter than split systems. Although advancements in technology mean there are fewer issues with air conditioning noise. Control from any smartphone or tablet via MyAir app One of the biggest advantages of MyAir is that you’re not restricted the wall mounted tablet. Download the MyAir app and you can control your air conditioning form any smartphone or tablet device, wherever you are! Want to cool your home before you get home? You can thanks to the MyAir app. Got a forgetful family member who forgets to turn off the air conditioning before they leave? No problem, you can quickly and easily check – and turn off – air conditioning remotely. 4. Precision air flow for maximum comfort Advantage Air’s patented Exact Air Regulator (EAR) controls how much air each room will get. This is one of MyAir’s secret weapons for striking the balance between energy savings and achieving your preferred temperature. Using technology normally found in commercial high-rise buildings, you can adjust the airflow in each room by as little as 5%. 5. Energy Saving Motion Sensors Another clever energy saving feature of MyAir is the option to have motion sensors installed in one or several rooms. If a room is empty for 10 minutes the target temperature will be adjusted (increased or decreased) by 1 degree. If there’s no motion detected for another 10 minutes it will adjusts the temperature by another 1 degree. While these are only small adjustments, it’s enough to reduce a room’s energy usage by a whopping 20% which is helpful to your hip pocket. This one’s an optional extra so just let us know if you’d like it included in your quote. 6. Individually control the temperature of each room – for comfort and energy savings One of our favourite features is the ability to control temperature and airflow for up to 10 zones – very handy for Queensland’s hot summers! Temperature of rooms can vary greatly throughout the day depending on the orientation of the house and season. But if you install an Individual Temperature Control (ITC) sensor – the system can automatically adjust the air flow to each room to maintain the desired temperature for that space. Example: Let’s imagine you’re running your air conditioning in the peak of summer. You’ve got a 1 year old who still has an afternoon nap, but their room is on the western side of house which cops the harsh afternoon sun. By installing an ITC sensor in this room/zone you can be confident that the room temperature will be maintained as the system will adjust the airflow without you having to constantly check. Expert tip: ITC sensors are super helpful for rooms that heat up faster than the rest of the house. And they can be installed in as many rooms at time or installation (or later!)
